Helping A Loved One
Helping a loved one or family member get treatment for addiction
If someone you care about has been struggling with substance abuse or addiction, you’ve probably experienced a range of emotions. In a situation like this, feelings of fear, frustration, confusion, and even anger are all normal and understandable responses.
Whatever you do, though, please don’t think that the situation is hopeless. With effective professional help, your loved one can overcome this problem. And you can play an important role. Please consider the following:
- Educate yourself about addiction. If you know which drug or drugs your loved one has been abusing, learn about them. The more you understand what your loved one is experiencing, the better prepared you’ll be to provide meaningful assistance.
- Talk to your loved one. Express your concern, and emphasize your love and support. More importantly, listen. Your loved one’s willingness or hesitance to admit a problem and consider treatment can guide your future actions.
- Learn about treatment options and identify programs that appear to be a good fit for your loved one.
- Get help for yourself. Don’t try to accomplish this all on your own. Get a few trusted friends or family members to help you. If your own mental or physical health begins to suffer, consult a professional. You can’t help others if you’re neglecting yourself.
- Offer to drive your loved one to appointments. Arrange for childcare or pet sitters. Do whatever you need to do to remove obstacles that may prevent your loved one from entering treatment.
Remember that addiction recovery can be a long process. Treatment is just one step. Your loved one will need the support of family and friends before, during, and after treatment.

If you or a loved one is battling an addiction, Conway Behavioral Health Hospital is an optimal environment in which to begin the recovery process. We recognize that addiction affects each person differently and that everyone deserves to have all of their needs addressed. For this reason, we provide individualized treatment plans for each patient in our care, which may include the following:
Medical care: Should any medical concerns arise during your time at Conway, we have physicians, licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and registered nurses (RNs) on staff to provide medical services.
Medication management: If you are suffering from symptoms of a mental health disorder in addition to an addiction, our staff will assess you to determine whether medication may be beneficial. Patients who are prescribed medication will receive medication management services as needed.
Individual therapy: Individual therapy sessions allow you to process the challenges and successes that you experience while recovering from drug or alcohol addiction. These one-on-one meetings with a therapist occur at least once during your time in inpatient treatment, but you have the option to request additional meetings when needed.
Group therapy: There are a minimum of four group therapy sessions held each day. Skills rehearsal groups, psychoeducation groups, process groups, and recreational groups give you a chance to explore a holistic approach to recovery from addiction. There are many topics covered in these groups, including:
- Mindfulness
- Adapting leisure skills
- Substance abuse
- Distress tolerance skills
- Emotional regulation skills
- Medication management
Family therapy: Family support can be extremely beneficial for those in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction. At Conway, licensed therapists and counselors lead family therapy sessions once a week. During this time, you and your loved ones can process how your addiction has impacted the family unit and begin to repair relationships.
Continuing Care
Continuing care after inpatient treatment for addiction
Inpatient treatment for addiction is meant to be a short-term experience, typically lasting around seven days. This level of care allows for stabilization and alleviation of crises so that patients can move to less intensive programming. Because your time in inpatient care is so minimal, it is important that you have a plan in place for when you’re ready to discharge.
On your first day of programming at Conway Behavioral Health Hospital, your treatment team will begin creating a discharge plan that will serve as a guide for when your time in inpatient care comes to an end. Your treatment team will find resources and continuing care options that will be of greatest benefit to you. Depending on the severity of your symptoms and where you are in your recovery, you may receive a recommendation to participate in one of Conway’s step-down levels of care, partial hospitalization programming (PHP) or intensive outpatient programming (IOP). Your treatment team will also provide you with other resources, which may include referrals to outside treatment providers and information on support groups in your area.
